The Holiness of God (2)

There is no God like Yahweh. He is far superior to every god that man has contrived. In fact, when man creates a god to worship, that god has obvious character flaws. For example, consider this excerpt about Baal and his relations with the other Canaanite gods (taken from Encyclopedia Mythica)
Baal announced that he would no longer acknowledge the authority of Mot, “death.” Baal not only excluded Mot from his hospitality and friendship, but also told him that he could only visit the deserts of the earth. In response to this challenge, Mot invited Baal to his abode to taste his fare, mud. Being terrified and unable to avoid the dreadful summons to the land of the dead, Baal coupled with a calf in order to strengthen himself for the ordeal, and then set out…Anat [Baal’s wife], aided by the sun goddess Shapash, brought the corpse [of Baal] back for burial…She begged Mot to restore Baal to life, but her pleas went without avail…Thus, Anat assaulted Mot, ripping him to pieces “with a sharp knife,” scattering his members “with a winnowing fan,” burning him “in a fire,” grinding him “in a mill,” and “over the fields strewing his remains.” [Later Baal was resurrected by El and Mot was banished.]
Baal is inhospitable and cruel to the other god, Mot. Therefore, Mot gets revenge by forcing Baal to submit to death. Then Baal’s wife tears Mot to pieces with a knife. What increderible immorality, dishonesty, and childishness belonged to these Canaanite deities! Yet, Yahweh is utterly unlike these gods.
Ex 15.11 “Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?”
Ps 86.8 Among the gods [there is] none like unto thee, O Lord; neither [are there any works] like unto thy works.

Yahweh is not moody or cruel, in fact, He stands completely aloof from any character flaws. He is perfect in His morality and His administration of justice is never perverted. He is never enticed to action by bribery or tempted by any evil whatsoever (James 1.13). Our God is holy and pure and completely reliable because of His consistency of nature.
Perhaps there are two ways of looking at our God’s holiness and moral impecability. (1) Because He is always holy we never have to worry about Him having a bad day, punishing us unjustly, or acting out of character. (2) Because He is always holy He can not bend the rules he sets. This means that if He inspires something to be written in Scripture, then in order for Him to remain holy he must carry it out. For example He has set an immutable law:
Ro 6.23a For the wages of sin is death…
There is a cause for trembling. Who amoung us has not sinned–not told a lie, or had an outburst of anger, or in some way dishonored God through our actions? We dare not expect God to compromise His holiness to pardon us. But, in His brilliance He found a way to preserve His character AND pardon us of our guilt–the cross.
Ro 6.23b but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
All praise to Him who is Holy, Holy, Holy, who was, and is, and is to come, the God of moral perfection, the infinitely wise Creator who will be praised now and forever. May all the inhabitants of the earth tremble before him and cease their striving because one day He will be exalted among the nations (Ps 46.10).
