‘Tis The Season
December 23rd, 2006 by Ken
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. (I Timothy 4: 1, 2)
Paul’s solemn directive to Timothy might remind one of Paul’s continual manner of operating in the book of Acts. Paul’s arrival in Athens (Acts 17: 16-34) is a marvelous example. Paul was provoked while observing the rampant idolatry in the city, not to insult the Athenians, but rather to boldly proclaim the message of repentance. As God gave him doors of utterance, he wisely complimented his audience for having religious zeal and related to Athenian cultural understanding: he spoke of the altar “to an unknown God.” He masterfully quoted a pagan poet, using the poet’s words in reference to the truth of the one, true God: “for we are also His children.” Paul was able to “hook into” the understanding of his audience and communicate clearly about the need to repent in light of future judgment; God’s plan for a day of righteous judgment is proved by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
I pray that believers who love God may have similar doors of utterance in this season when idolatrous misunderstandings seem to reach a climax. Maybe some with whom we interact will be able to hear that the Son of God is real, not just a pop icon. Maybe some will be reached with the true giving of the message that delivers from death, instead of passing through another season of hollow gestures. Maybe some will come to a meaningful understanding of truth during a time of year that often leaves many with a heart full of aching disappointments. May believers be motivated and stirred up with readiness to speak: “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” (I Peter 3: 15)
God bless you and your families during this holiday season!
AMEN! Tis the season for preaching the gospel of the Kingdom! Great points.
