The Roman Road

I recently came across this short video by Paul Washer addressing Pastors. At the end of it, Paul [himself a Southern Baptist] says,

“I’ll tell you what was going on. If you had been baptized as an infant, you are in the church. Even though you are unregenerate you were in the church. You got in. Why? Because you went through some man-made superstitious thing. Southern Baptists are no different. It’s just we don’t have infant baptism, we have that silly superstitious prayer at the end of a Roman Road that has sent more people to hell than every brothel in this country.”

Do you know what the Roman Road is? It is the standard evangelism technique used to train millions of Christians in Bible Colleges and Churches across America on how to share their faith. Generally it works by reading the following verses to a lost person and then following it up with the simple prayer at the end. [Note, the prayer at the end varies depending on which tract you are reading but this one is representative.]

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” We must all realize that we are sinners and that we need forgiveness. We are not worthy of God’s grace.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”If we remain sinners, we will die. However, if we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and repent of our sins, we will have eternal life.

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Through Jesus, God gave us a way to be saved from our sins. God showed us His love by giving us the potential for life through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Just confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved!

“Jesus is the only road to heaven. All you have to do is pray this prayer: Lord I am a sinner, I confess all my sins and I ask for your forgiveness. Come into my heart and be Lord of my life. In your name amen.”

What is missing in the “Roman Road” to justify Paul Washer’s remark that this evangelism technique “has sent more people to hell than every brothel in this country?”

Amen. If we did not have the letter to the Romans what would we do. We’d have to rely on the teachings of Jesus or Peter. Jesus taught many will call him ‘Lord, Lord and he will tell them depart
from me your workers of iniquity or lawless ones, I never knew you.’
Starting at Matthew 25:31 Jesus decribes the final judgement and your eternity is based on how you treated your fellow man. He is the ransom for many. Dont get me wrong. Thank you Lord for the
atonement of the cross but you have to obey God, not just say a 15 second prayer.
